Everything that goes on while the city sleeps

Have you ever wondered what goes on overnight for that ACCIONA electric motorbike to be ready and waiting by your door each morning? Find out with this photo gallery.

Does this scene sound familiar to you?

Your alarm clock goes off bright and early and you're in the shower in under 10 seconds. Today is going to be a busy day, so it's best to get to work early.

Like every morning, as you leave the house, you look for an ACCIONA shared motorbike using the mobile App. You find one available right where you are, like every morning. And in 15 minutes, you're sitting at your desk.

You've avoided the traffic jam that you've managed to avoid since this service exists, you've left the motorbike parked up—it will shortly be picked up by another user—and spent less time worrying about how to get to the office than it takes to grab a coffee from the machine. Traffic is now one less problem in your routine...

But… have you ever wondered what happens during the night, while you're asleep, for that motorbike to be right there, where you need it, with its electric battery fully charged and its mechanics checked? Sometimes we think things just happen, that they appear out of the blue, like when you stumble across a clump of porcini mushrooms that wasn't there the day before. Sometimes we think things just appear when we need them, and we think no further.

However, for each ACCIONA shared electric motorbike to be available, clean, checked over and ready right when you need it, it takes a multitude of people and a whole framework of specific and minute details that we want to tell you about. How are the batteries charged? Who decides on the location of the motorbikes? What kind of maintenance is done out on the street? What data does the bike generate on each trip?

1. NON-STOP SERVICE

Working around the clock—and even more intensively, if that's possible, at night—operators tasked with different activities make sure that every morning each and every ACCIONA motorbike in each city has been checked over and is ready for use.

2. JOCKEYS ARE THE FIRST TO ARRIVE

Jockeys provide rapid assistance for the ACCIONA motorbike service. They patrol the city on electric motorbikes to deal with incidents reported to them by the Control Centre and resolve issues reported by the motorcycles, such as changing a rear-view mirror in situ, replacing a helmet or helping a user who has left something in the top case.

3. IF POSSIBLE, EVERYTHING IS RESOLVED OUT ON THE STREET

When an incident occurs, the Jockey closest to the reported incident comes to resolve it. The aim is to always offer an on-site solution to keep the motorbike in use. But if the problem is more serious, they call out the recovery service to have the motorcycle removed as soon as possible and repaired in the workshop.

4. REMOVING MOTORBIKES, A JOB FOR THE RECOVERY SERVICE

If a Jockey is unable to repair a motorbike, they will call out the recovery service to come and remove it. Recovery service operatives drive a van with room for up to eight motorbikes. Their job is to take damaged motorbikes to the workshop and put repaired motorbikes back into service.

5. BATTERY PACKS READY FOR USE

When a motorbike consumes 80% of its battery charge, it automatically locks and sends an alert to the control centre. A swapper is then sent to replace the battery with a fully charged one as soon as possible. The warehouse holds an army of batteries that are ready for use.

6. THE SWAPPER, ALL BATTERIES ARE CHARGED BEFORE DAWN

Swappers are responsible for monitoring which motorbikes need a new battery; they use an application to help them do this. They work around the clock and much of their activity takes place at night. Their goal is for all motorbikes in the service to have 100% battery charge at dawn, ready to complete the first trips of the day.

ACCIONA is the world's largest motosharing operator, with a fleet of more than 10,000 motorbikes across several European cities, including Madrid, Barcelona, Rome and Milan.

Sustainability is the basis for ACCIONA's mobility service, not only because it involves non-polluting electric motorbikes whose charge energy is certified as 100% renewable, but also because it comes with a range of electric recharge vehicles.

Users have already made more than four million trips since the service started and demand for this type of sustainable mobility in cities continues to grow. This is why all operators are committed to ensuring that every morning, before the city wakes up, each and every ACCIONA motorbike has been checked and is ready for use.
